Performs work of basic to moderate difficulty including materials testing and basic surveying.
Provides on-site compliance inspection, quality assurance, and progress monitoring for conformance to plans, contracts, specifications, and codes applicable to the construction operations assigned. Communicates with and advise contractors of discrepancies and the necessary actions to conform to the plans and specifications.
Assists with review of payment applications, final inspections, and creation of punchlists.
Ensures that highway work zones and traffic control are in compliance with current standards.
Maintains project records including daily diaries documenting work performed by construction contractors. Reports will involve the use of basic algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations and associated sketches.
Checks materials and material documents to verify that they have been tested and when required sends additional samples to the client or other testing laboratories for verification.
Stand and sit as needed on project work sites, climb ladders, work at heights, and work outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions, and be able to safely navigate uneven terrain.
Performs various administrative duties to include but not limited to a daily timesheet, monthly expense report, and monthly mileage report.

Communicates effectively and professionally with the client, contractor, traveling public, adjacent property owners, other project stakeholders, and MBP team members.
Working knowledge of basic mathematics including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations based on field measurements.
Construction-related training and/or experience or course work in road/bridge construction, civil engineering, materials, and tools utilized in the construction of transportation projects.
Must possess OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.
Certification(s) from VDOT such as Intermediate Work Zone Protection, Asphalt Field Level I and II, Soils and Aggregate, Pavement Marking, Nuclear Gauge Safety, Guard Rail Inspector Training, ACI Concrete, and DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Management are preferred. Other relevant certifications include WACEL, ICC, NICET or MARTCP.
High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
Construction work experience and basic understanding of construction means and methods for transportation projects with a focus on VDOT or other DOT experience. Experience inspecting projects to include roadway widening, intersection improvements, signalization, bridges, roadway maintenance, streetscape, utilities, and work activities of the same or similar type. Must also maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record and pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check, DMV driving record check, reference verification, and work history check.
Ability to utilize computers and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, Email, and Internet navigation, and web-based tools.
