The Shelter Assistant reports to the Shelter Operations Supervisor and works in a 24‑hour, 7‑day shelter program. The role ensures the safety, health, and well‑being of participants while promoting a trauma‑informed care environment.
Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, with at least one year of experience in social services or working with low‑income, at‑risk, or homeless populations. Basic computer literacy, proficiency in Microsoft Office, a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card, and a clean Arizona driver’s license are required.
The position requires the ability to lift 20 lb, navigate one flight of stairs regularly, and perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions. It also involves extended periods of stationary work using standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and phones.
Successful applicants will embrace UMOM’s culture, exercise independent judgment, and thrive as both self‑managers and collaborative team members. They must be adaptable, meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and build strong relationships in a fast‑paced, data‑driven environment.
Work hours follow a five‑day schedule with two consecutive days off, including weekends and holidays. The role requires a valid fingerprint card, background and drug screening, and reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.
UMOM New Day Centers, founded in 1964, is Arizona’s largest provider of services for families experiencing homelessness. With an annual operating budget of $20 million, UMOM serves over 15,000 unique individuals each year through shelter, supportive services, and housing programs in Maricopa County.
