Provides non‑hazardous solid & liquid waste management, soil remediation and recycling services across North America.
The System Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining all aspects of the sort system at the facility, ensuring safe and optimal performance. This role works closely with maintenance departments and will also propose continuous‑improvement initiatives. It is explicitly not an Information Technology position.
Each day the technician inspects the system during warm‑up, documents the checks, and makes recommendations to the supervisor. Specialty equipment such as screens, Eddy Currents, and drumfeeders are cleaned before start‑up, and the work area is kept tidy. The technician monitors material flow, adjusts screen angles and conveyor speeds, and ensures a proper balance of fiber and containers on the line.
During production the technician oversees the operation of the film hood, bag breaker, and drumfeeders, troubleshoots to prevent jams, and records any downtime or repair needs on provided forms. Communication with other operators is essential for smooth operational changes, and mechanical repairs are performed as directed by the System Supervisor. Participation in maintenance meetings and other assigned projects is also required.
Candidates need at least two years of experience in a recycling facility, a strong understanding of the sorting process, and keen attention to detail. They must assist with employee relations by covering absenteeism, reporting absences, and providing training as needed, while complying with all company policies and procedures.
When working in the facility, employees must wear CSA‑approved safety shoes, hearing protection, high‑visibility clothing, gloves, safety glasses, and hard hats. GFL is an equal‑opportunity employer and offers accommodations for applicants who need them.
The position is a permanent, full‑time role on the afternoon shift (1:45 PM – 11:00 PM) with 100 % employer‑paid benefits, a Group Retirement Savings Plan with matching and stock options, paid vacation, uniforms, and opportunities for overtime and advancement.
