Senior Engineering Lead I - Power System Studies

Description

Mortenson is seeking a Senior Engineering Lead I – Power System Studies to lead detailed engineering designs for high‑voltage substations and transmission systems supporting utility‑scale wind, solar and storage projects. The role coordinates design packages, performs QA/QC, and provides expert analysis in short‑circuit, reactive power, losses, TOV, harmonics, and arc‑flash studies while managing team schedules and resources.

• Performed data analysis and engineering calculations for substations up to 500 kV.

• Supported proposals, estimating, procurement, and construction activities.
• Mentored and coached junior engineers.
• Assisted engineers in completing large, complex projects.
• Developed study methodologies aligned with customer requirements and best practices.
• Coordinated with other disciplines and Design Phase Managers to deliver designs.
• Verified construction compliance with electrical design drawings.
• Implemented QA/QC processes.
• Developed and evaluated technical requirements for procurement and construction.
• Assisted field personnel in resolving unexpected site conditions.

Requirements

The position is open in Minneapolis, MN; Fargo, ND; San Antonio, TX; or Denver, CO, with remote options considered and up to 20 % travel required.

• Applied standard engineering techniques, made adaptations, and provided interpretations.
• ABET‑accredited engineering degree; BSEE preferred; Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering is a plus.
• 12+ years of system studies experience, especially in wind, solar, and storage projects.
• Expertise in modeling inverter generation, power flows, short‑circuit, reactive power, losses, TOV, harmonics, and arc‑flash.
• 1+ year of team‑lead or project‑scope leadership experience.
• Strong knowledge of electrical power engineering theory and design evaluation.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Ability to travel up to 20 %.

• Base salary $140,000–$210,000 (higher in select locations) plus incentive plan eligibility.
