Principal Planner

Description

In this role the incumbent provides strategic direction for municipal, environmental, and land‑use/entitlement projects while overseeing the Planning Group’s performance, budget, and profitability. The position also drives business development and technical planning services for a geographically diverse client base.

• Provide strategic direction to municipal, environmental, and land‑use/entitlement departments.
• Lead monthly department meetings to review projects, deadlines, and updates.
• Monitor staff performance to ensure efficiency, productivity, and quality standards.
• Manage the Planning Group’s budget, allocate funding, and maintain ≥15 % annual profitability.
• Identify and implement process improvements to enhance workflow.
• Mentor and coach department managers and team leaders.
• Communicate organizational changes to secure team buy‑in.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to shape strategic planning and drive growth.
• Build and maintain relationships with developers, government agencies, community groups, vendors, and industry stakeholders.
• Develop and execute plans aligned with company objectives and regional expansion (e.g., San Luis Obispo, Clovis, Denver).
• Support business development and proposal efforts for the Planning Group.
• Deliver high‑quality municipal, entitlement, and environmental planning services, leveraging expertise in zoning, land‑use regulations, CEQA, and NEPA.

Requirements

• Meet minimum qualifications: B.S. in Planning or related field, 10‑15 years experience, AICP certification, and 5 years leadership experience.
• Demonstrate project management, analytical, and problem‑solving skills; proficient in GIS, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and data analysis tools.
• Exhibit strong communication and interpersonal abilities for interacting with staff, elected officials, developers, and the public.

Benefits

• Compensation includes $140,000–$170,000 base salary, full health coverage (50 % for dependents), 401(k) match, ESOP participation, and performance bonuses.
