Assistant Mechanical Designer

Description

Designer shall work in a team environment and under the directive of a lead Designer to develop accurate, constructible, coordinated, and timely Mechanical system models meeting McKenney’s drafting standards and fully coordinated with the architectural & structural elements of the building and the other building trades. An Assistant Mechanical Designer will also be responsible for providing accurate shop drawings that support the construction team. The designer reports to the Lead Designer & Production supervisor and interacts with the fabrication supervisor, detailers, project managers, project engineers, and field foreman.

• Use McKenney’s CAD standards to create models that meet company and project requirements.
• Model systems accurately according to plans, specifications, and code to produce fabrication documents.
• Coordinate systems with ductwork, mechanical equipment, other trades, and architectural/structural elements.
• Ensure safe and adequate access by following manufacturer and code clearances to avoid installation conflicts.
• Provide annotated, dimensioned shop drawings, spool assemblies, and spool drawings using the fabrication team.
• Review and distribute assembly sheets, bills of material, and spool drawings to project managers and field leaders.
• Communicate proactively with project managers, engineers, and foremen during design, coordination, and construction, including weekly updates.
• Manage requests for information and shop drawing progress with company tools.
• Identify deficiencies and propose solutions (RFIs) to support timely project completion.
• Deliver all documents on time and within estimated drafting hours to meet customer commitments.
• Read and interpret mechanical, architectural, and structural construction documents.
• Maintain a professional appearance.
• Use time productively, maximize efficiency, and meet challenging work goals.
• Take on additional responsibilities and manage priorities with minimal guidance.

Requirements

• Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field, or at least two years of Autodesk modeling experience (AutoCAD/Revit) or four years of field experience.
• Experience with Autodesk Fabrication CADmep and Revit for mechanical drafting.
• Basic understanding of HVAC mechanical piping systems.
• Ability to visualize three‑dimensional layouts from two‑dimensional drawings.
• Experience in the construction industry.
• Self‑starter who works well independently and as part of a team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Basic PC proficiency in Windows, word processing, spreadsheets, email, web applications, and databases.
• Work primarily in a typical interior/office environment.
