Generator Technician

SUMMARY: Responsible for the inspection, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and fueling of Prime generators and related systems in a data center to ensure continuous power availability and compliance with safety and operational standards.

Generator Inspection, Troubleshooting, Operation & Maintenance

• Perform daily visual inspections of generators, fuel systems, and batteries.
• Coordinate with engineers for major repairs to contact with 3rd party vendor.
• Collect fuel and oil samples from generators as per schedule. Coordinate with the reporting Engineer or Facility Manager to send samples to the laboratory for periodic analysis and testing. Record and report results and take corrective action if any anomalies are detected.
• Maintain accurate fuel consumption and inventory records.
• Report low fuel levels or any irregularities.
• Check oil, coolant, and fuel levels.
• Monitor generator performance (load, voltage, frequency, and alarms).
• Ensure there are no fuel leaks anywhere in the fuel system. Inspect all pipes, hoses, pumps, and connections daily and report any leaks or irregularities immediately to prevent hazards.
• Check generator status at the start of the shift.
• Perform minor repairs or adjustments as required.
• Check and ensure the battery status is normal and the electrolyte level is within the recommended range. Report any abnormalities immediately and take corrective action as required.
• Manage fueling of generators according to schedules and fuel level requirements.
• Check that the battery charger is functioning properly and that voltages remain within normal range at all times.
• Check and ensure all fueling line valves are open according to the Sequence of Operation (SOO) to guarantee continuous fuel supply to the generators.
• Inspect air filters, belts, hoses, and other critical components.
• Maintain logs for generator operation, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities.
• Ensure generators are kept clean at all times, both internally and externally, to maintain optimal performance and prevent dust, debris, or contamination-related issues.
• Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance (PPM), and operational checks as per approved schedule.
• Place the fueling system on manual mode if the automatic system fails as per EOP to supply fuel to the generators to ensure smooth operation.
• Monitor and operate diesel generators as per standard operating procedures (SOPs) as per approved schedule.
• Troubleshoot generator issues and report faults to the Electrical Engineer immediately.
• Lead generator on-load testing activities and ensure generators are healthy and capable of taking the required load.
• Ensure generators are ready for emergency load conditions at all times.
• Prevent fuel contamination and monitor fuel quality.
• Check and ensure there are no active alarms on the fueling system. Immediately investigate and rectify any alarms or abnormal indications to maintain uninterrupted fuel supply.
• Ensure the fueling system is set to automatic mode at all times and system is ready to supply fuel to generators immediately in the event of a utility power breakdown, ensuring uninterrupted power availability.
• Perform OFF load testing as per approved scheduled.
• Identify and report faults or abnormal conditions immediately.

• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Demonstrated skills in diagnosis, analysis and problem solving.
• Knowledge of diesel generator systems, electrical distribution, and safety standards.
• Ability to work under pressure, adaptable.
• Ability to communicate effectively with vendors who perform maintenance on the Generator equipment.
• Proven experience in generator operation, maintenance and fueling, preferably in data centers or critical facilities.
• Very familiar with Health & Safety guidelines and procedures, especially for operating mechanical or energized equipment.
• Ability to work a rotational on-call shift.
• High school diploma or technical certification in electrical/mechanical engineering or related field.
• Have experience in equipment commissioning, startup/shutdown, LOTO (Lockout-Tagout) and isolation, as well as performance monitoring and alarm management.
• Have minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in Generator inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
• Ability to diagnose root cause of equipment failures.
