  • Performs general station maintenance to keep stations in neat and orderly fashion.
  • Inspects each station as required, reads flow meters and gauges, generator run hours, electric meters, and records them. Must be able to interpret status of station.
  • Adheres to all Racine Wastewater Utility safety procedures as well as Utility work and safety rules.
  • Puts holding tanks in and out of service in high flow or maintenance situations.
  • Exercise valves, maintains and repairs lift station motors, pumps, meters, generators and other major mechanical, electrical and hydraulic units of equipment, and physical structure in accordance with blueprints or manuals. Dismantles machinery or equipment to gain access to defective parts and repairs or replaces them using various tools. Cleans and lubricates equipment according to the manufacture’s recommendations.
  • Navigates a computer screen, and interprets SCADA system and GIS data. Works with computerized maintenance program work orders and updating of computer information.
  • Works in conjunction with the sewer cleaning crew and plant staff to identify abnormal and high flow situations, as well as causes for lift station alarms and malfunctions.
  • Sets up 6-inch portable pumps and generators.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on lift station equipment and keeps records of work done on equipment.

  • Master's Degree
  • Work well under pressure; the position can be extremely demanding during high flow conditions, with ability to work longer than an eight-hour day and the requirement to be rotated on call during off hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Software technology used may include maintenance software, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Antero Maintenance Tracking Software, City Works, GIS, Time Management Software (TMS); other software may be applied.

  • Must have good dexterity and be in good physical condition with ability to enter confined spaces.
  • Must have good mechanical aptitude, verifiable by past work experience.

  • A valid state-issued motor vehicle operating license and Class B CDL with a tanker endorsement is required within 6 months.
  • Ability to work in less than desirable conditions (such as sewers, wet wells, siphon chambers, tunnels, and basins) under potentially moderately unsafe and uncomfortable conditions, where exposure to environmental factors such as odors, dampness, chemicals, noise, pathogenic organisms, electrical currents, and/or dusts can cause a risk of injury; step and ladder climbing with fall hazards, slip and trip hazards, and large water basins with fall and drowning risk.

  • Must become familiar with The Capacity, Management, Operations and Maintenance Program (CMOM), and understand the ramifications of a by-pass in the collection system. Must become familiar with the Racine collection system and safety sites.
  • Mechanical training and certification in HVAC, pipefitting or electro-mechanical technology is a plus.

  • Ability to work outdoors under severe weather conditions; hot and cold; rain, snow, sleet, wind, and sun.
  • Good computer skills, including working knowledge of SCADA systems, City Works, and GIS software.
  • Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Collection Systems Subgrade (SS) certification is required within 1 year of hire.
  • Plumbing and welding, as required.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific written and oral instructions; and perform duties with minimum direct supervision.
  • Ability to plow snow and perform landscape duties.
  • High School graduation, or GED equivalent is required.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with varied and diverse contacts, such as utility personnel, vendor representatives, and the general public.

  • Ability to exert strenuous physical effort to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs., typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. Twisting and crouching and working at odd angles is required.
  • Hand tools, power tools, welder, hoists, gas torch, power washer, steam cleaner, fire hoses, shovels, snow blowers, power vehicles, Bobcat, fork lift, hoists, step ladders, extension ladders, hydraulic lifts, electronic diagnostic equipment, manhole cover removing device, confined space entry equipment, gas detector, computers, lifting equipment/crane, and miscellaneous tools and equipment.
  • Ability to utilize, interpret, and apply a variety of advisory data and information such as instructional pamphlets, blueprints, line diagrams, meters, gauges, operation and maintenance manuals, charts, and graphs.
  • Ability to walk extensively, often while carrying tools and supplies. Ability to work in a standing position for long stretches of time, and ability to work in cramped spaces.
  • Trained in confined space entry regulations and is able to make entries.
  • Less than one year
  • Skill in analyzing, diagnosing, correcting mechanical failures and defects; including a working knowledge of mechanical functions, principles and techniques.
