Active Distribution System Control and Protection Intern- Summer 2026

Description

• Conduct literature survey and benchmarking to assess state‑of‑the‑art methods for a given problem.
• Participate in applied research on active distribution systems (LVDC, MVDC, microgrid) to produce proofs of concept, prototypes, patents, or academic publications.
• Promote active distribution solutions within ABB’s customer industries and develop prototype solutions using hardware‑in‑loop testing (e.g., Opal‑RT).
• Design control schemes for power‑electronics converters using Matlab/Simulink.
• Develop control schemes for distribution systems, including secondary and tertiary control.
• Create protection schemes for distribution systems, such as protection devices, converter fault‑current limiting, and coordination.

Requirements

Qualifications for the role include current enrollment in a U.S. degree program, authorization to work for ABB, and pursuit of a PhD or master’s in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, with a preference for PhD candidates.

• Currently enrolled in a U.S. degree program and authorized to work for ABB in the U.S.
• Pursuing a PhD or master’s in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering (PhD preferred).
• Knowledge of distribution system apparatus, operations, and power‑electronics converters.
• Understanding of power system fault protection and active distribution system modeling.
• Proficiency in Matlab/Simulink and Opal‑RT for modeling and simulation.
• Experience with object‑oriented programming languages (Python, C++, C#, JavaScript) for data processing and analytics.
• Ability to quickly acquire in‑depth knowledge of new technologies and application domains.
