The Water Resources Group conducts fisheries studies and water‑quality assessments, providing expert consultation for Duke Energy’s facilities. In this role you will support regulatory compliance, serve as an environmental subject‑matter expert, and stay current with relevant laws and technical standards while evaluating literature and guidelines that affect company programs.
- Provide regulatory compliance support for generating facilities and company operations.
- Serve as an environmental subject‑matter expert in assigned functions.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, and technical aspects.
- Evaluate literature, standards, and guidelines to determine compliance implications.
- Conduct studies for NPDES/Clean Water Act permits, FERC hydroelectric licensing, and NRC nuclear licensing.
- Perform special studies on fisheries, natural resources, and water‑quality issues.
- Analyze data and produce written reports; participate in industry and professional groups.

Work is performed both in the field – sampling lakes, rivers, reservoirs and conducting fish surveys – and in an office setting for data analysis and report writing. The position requires 50 %+ travel, frequent overnight stays, moderate physical activity, and occasional overtime, weekend, outage or call‑out duties.
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (or High School/GED with 4–7 years related experience) and at least 3 years of related work.
- Desired: Degree in fisheries, wildlife, chemistry, or related natural science; 1+ year directly related experience; skills in fish sampling, taxonomy, water chemistry, power‑generation technologies, and database use.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in teams, manage multiple priorities, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Valid driver’s license and strong analytical/computer skills; ability to develop compliance‑focused systems and understand project‑management concepts.
- Travel requirement of 50 %+ with field work on water bodies, moderate physical exertion, and occasional overtime or call‑out duties.
