What you would be doing

The Director of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), will have a multifaceted role as the principal consultant and operational lead, overseeing and optimizing all operational aspects of our organization while providing strategic guidance and consultancy services related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This dual role will involve strategic planning, process improvement, resource management, geospatial analysis, and team leadership to ensure efficient and effective delivery of products or services while leveraging GIS technology to address complex business challenges and drive innovation.

  • Team Leadership: Provide strong leadership and mentorship to the operations team. Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Process Optimization: Continuously review and improve operational processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Identify areas for automation and technology integration.
  • Resource Management: Efficiently oversee project and program management’s allocation of resources, including personnel, equipment, and materials, to meet operational goals and budgets.
  • Communication: Establish effective communication channels within the operations team and with other departments. Provide regular updates to the executive team on operational performance.
  • Strategic GIS Consulting: Collaborate with clients to understand their business objectives and challenges. Develop and implement strategic GIS solutions that align with their goals, add value, and drive growth.
  • Geospatial Analysis: Develop and foster a team for implementation of advanced geospatial analysis to derive insights, patterns, and trends from spatial data. Utilize this analysis to support clients in making data-driven decisions.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure that products or services meet quality standards and regulatory requirements. Implement quality control and assurance programs. Manage and mitigate lessons learned to improve future projects and program initiatives.
  • Backlog Management: Oversee backlog operations, including procurement, resource forecasting management, and vendor/partner relationships. Optimize the backlog to ensure operational cost-efficiency and reliability.
  • Technology and Software Expertise: Stay updated with the latest GIS technologies, tools, and software. Provide guidance on technology selection, implementation, and customization to meet client needs.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the executive team to develop and implement operational strategies that align with the organization's mission and objectives. Translate high-level goals into actionable plans.
  • Risk Management: Identify operational risks and develop risk mitigation strategies. Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Data Management: Oversee the collection, integration, and quality control of geospatial data. Ensure data accuracy, relevance, and security in line with industry best practices.
  • Project Leadership: Lead and manage GIS projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget. Coordinate project teams, set project goals, and monitor progress to meet client expectations.
  • Performance Metrics: Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track the effectiveness of operational processes. Take corrective actions as needed to achieve performance targets. This includes KPIs for the program at a management level, but also communicating the program’s vision, mission, direction and progress to the team as a whole on a regular basis to foster transparency and a collaborative environment.
  • Client Relationships: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with clients. Act as a trusted advisor, identifying new opportunities for GIS integration and expansion within client organizations.
  • Budget Oversight: Develop and manage the operations budget, tracking expenditures and ensuring cost control measures are in place.
