The Line Technician Learner position is the entry‑level craft within the Line Tech hierarchy. In this role you will assist higher‑level technicians with substation construction and maintenance while developing intermediate skills and increasing independence.
Key duties include adhering to safety practices and human performance tools, understanding line equipment isolation and grounding, and communicating clearly both verbally and in writing. You will learn to read electrical schematics, perform basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, think methodically, and gain exposure to transmission and distribution switching activities while operating bucket trucks and other aerial devices.
Minimum qualifications are a High School diploma or GED, the ability to lift and carry 75 lb, and the capacity to work in a diverse environment and on elevated work surfaces. The position is based in North and South Carolina and requires after‑hours availability.
Candidates must complete Duke Energy’s online Virtual Assessment for Lineworkers and the Physical Abilities Test, obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license within one year, and meet DOT physical, respirator, and color‑vision requirements. A weight restriction of 275 lb and residency within 45 minutes of the assigned site are essential, with relocation required within 12 months at the employee’s expense.
