This role will work closely with various AW teams in Operations, Compliance, IT, and Finance, to identify risk and share technical knowledge based on areas of expertise.
- Collaborate with and influence stakeholders through effective communication of audit/project observations and recommendations to reduce risk and enhance controls. Independently propose recommendations that support AW strategies and objectives.
- This includes coordination, planning, fieldwork, audit/project reports, and issue resolution.
- Ensure communication and performance of responsibilities is organized, efficient, proactive, timely, cost effective and professional.
- Train / develop junior team members to ensure team productivity.
- Lead risk-based audits/projects and audit teams, ensuring quality and timely audit deliverables.
- The safeguarding of company assets
- Assess risks and controls following internal audit industry standards and AW IA procedures.
- Assist in the development of a pipeline of talent.
- Serve as an internal or external representative for AW and/or AW IA within your areas of expertise.
- Build rapport across diverse teams, including AW stakeholders and external vendors throughout audits/projects. Manage competing interests as needed.

- Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree is a plus.
- Risk, compliance, and controls awareness
- Knowledge of IT auditing concepts and frameworks a plus.
- Water utility industry experience is desired.
- Compliance with laws and regulations
- Communication skills and exposure to all areas (Operations, Compliance, IT, Finance) and levels (front-line employees, executive leadership team, Board) at AW
- Ability to apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills to multiple projects while working as part of a team and/or independently.
- Minimum of seven (7) years overall business experience, of which a minimum of five (5) years within audit, compliance, and/or risk related fields is required.
- Problem solving, organization, and project management
- In-depth expertise in process evaluation and audit including planning, testing, and reporting.
- Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or other related audit, compliance, or risk designation preferred. Interest in pursuing and obtaining a relevant professional certification desired. Other professional certification(s), licensure, or advanced degree are a plus
- Understanding of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance requirements and risks/controls assessment following an integrated business controls framework.
- Reliability of financial reporting
- Analytical - use data to drive actionable insights
- Up to 5% travel within the United States, usually scheduled with advance notice.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel functionalities (i.e. pivot tables, Vlookup, etc.)
- Prior public accounting, corporate and/or multi-subsidiary company experience a plus.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on initiative, knowledge sharing, team building and decision making.
- AuditBoard, SAP, PowerPlan, Oracle, and Alteryx knowledge are a plus.

Development Opportunities
The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience.
