  • Contribute to the formulation and on-going development of Route health, safety and quality strategies and plans, and supporting where appropriate, through constructive participation, any relevant company-wide programmes.
  • Manage an effective process for investigation recommendations, mitigating the highlighted risks, and embedding within the Route the learning from incidents to eliminate the potential for repeats.
  • Act as the Designated Competent Person (DCP) for workplace accidents including providing expert advice on accident and incident investigation tools, techniques and best practice. Direct the reporting of all accidents and incidents on the route and implement the Fair Culture processes.
  • Support implementation of the company safety management system across all Route activities.
  • Identify and keep under review all safety risks relevant to the Route and the controls put in place to manage the identified risks, advising the Director, Route Health Safety & Quality when controls become or are likely to become ineffective.
  • Lead the development and implementation of appropriate processes so the Route complies with legal obligations and national safety policies, and meets its responsibilities and targets for the management of safety.
  • Engage with and contribute to the wider Network Rail safety leadership programme.
  • Support engagement with regulatory bodies, trades unions, customers and other stakeholders on safety matters specific to the route.

  • Understanding of accident investigation processes
  • Able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the capability to influence the views of peers, more senior colleagues and other stakeholders
  • Must be a member of the Institute of Occupational Health and safety (IOSH) at Chartered (CMIOSH) level or above
  • Previous successful experience of leading teams in a complex, dynamic environment
  • Able to demonstrate detailed understanding of safety and environmental management systems
  • Significant successful experience in senior management roles
  • Hold NEBOSH Qualification
  • Previous successful experience of managing safety, health, environmental and/or sustainable development issues
