- Develop and provide updates to all department general orders and governing policies and ensure compliance by bargaining unit personnel and staff
- Drive a command-type vehicle and communicate using a two-way radio
- Command and control emergency situations through a system of applied emergency scene strategies, and apply this knowledge to specific training programs
- Evaluate the effectiveness of all training and activities assigned to shift personnel to ensure compliance with rules and regulations governed at the federal, state, and local levels
- Oversee and manage shift officers and subordinates' day-to-day activities, operations, and performance of assigned responsibilities and duties
- Function as the administrative, fiscal, and managerial chief officer for the department
- Ensure compliance with Part 139 ARFF requirements in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certification Standards, and Part 139.321- handling and storage of hazardous materials, in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), federal, state, and local laws and regulations

- AAAE’s Airport Fire Officer credential
- Must meet minimum standards in F.S. 633.35
- Associate of Science degree in a fire-related field with two years of experience as Battalion Chief (or of equal or higher level); or five years of experience as a Battalion Chief (or of equal or higher level)
- AAAE's Airport Master Firefighter credential
- Two years of experience as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Florida Fire Officer certification and Florida Fire Instructor certification (or higher)
- Basic Life Support/CPR certificate
- ICS training; 100, 200, 300 & 400 courses
- A valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of hire
- Designation as a managerial and confidential employee, as defined by Florida Statute 447.203
- A Florida Firefighters Standards Council Certificate of Compliance
- FRS Pension Plan – traditional retirement plan that offers a guaranteed monthly benefit upon vesting requirements
- FRS Investment Plan – benefit is based on contributions made to the account and on investment performance. Both plans require eligible employees to contribute 3% per paycheck, while the employer contributes 13.63% for regular class or 32.79% for Special Risk.
