The Sales Associate assists customers and contractors by providing quotes and product information both in person and over the phone while upholding the company’s high standard of customer service. Responsibilities include handling special orders, advanced pricing, and serving as the liaison between the customer and internal purchasing, design, and production teams. The role generates sales by gathering product needs and design specifications.
Key duties involve responding to inquiries about product selection, order placement, pricing, complaints, and delivery scheduling, followed by diligent customer follow‑up. The associate initiates outbound calls to meet projected sales goals and continuously expands sales technique and product knowledge through company training. Sales opportunities are created by researching client needs, industry competition, and product features. Technical tasks include providing material take‑offs, assisting drafting and engineering, and analyzing lumber sizes using appropriate software.
The associate coordinates purchase and delivery of special products, obtains pricing specifications, and enters orders, pricing, and related data into the computer system. Accurate invoices, work orders, and sales tickets are generated, while stock levels on the sales floor and in the stockroom are maintained. Daily cash‑register operations are performed, and credits, returns, and late payments are researched as needed. The employee works with outside sales representatives, adheres to safety procedures, and may suggest improvements.
Minimum requirements include a high school diploma and one to two years of experience in the building‑material industry with extensive product and application knowledge. The candidate must be able to drive and walk throughout yards, plants, and offices.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential, along with the ability to influence and provide excellent customer service. Candidates should possess knowledge of basic sales techniques, business math, building‑material applications, and inventory control. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, an ERP system, and the ability to operate a computer, calculator, and cash register are required. Attention to detail and a solid understanding of company products, production processes, and product standards are expected.
The work environment includes both typical office settings and outdoor locations with temperature and weather variations. Employees must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lb frequently and up to 80 lb occasionally, and must stand and walk for most of the day. Safety procedures must be observed at all times.
