Key duties include operating forestry machinery, conducting timber harvesting, mulching, windblow clear‑up, hedge cutting, mowing, site clearance and timber movement, as well as supporting the growing, harvesting and delivery of Christmas trees. The forester will also respond to unforeseen events such as storms or wildfires, maintain plant machinery, and work collaboratively to meet broader Estate objectives while adhering to health‑and‑safety standards.
- Operate specialist forestry machinery for timber harvesting, mulching, windblow clear‑up, hedge cutting, mowing and site clearance.
- Maintain and move timber using trailers, cranes, winches and telehandlers.
- Support growing, harvesting, sales and delivery of Christmas trees.
- Respond to emergencies such as storms and wildfires and manage unforeseen forest events.
- Follow risk assessments, safe systems of work and health‑and‑safety legislation.
- Collaborate with the team to achieve wider Estate objectives.

The role joins the Forestry team to deliver a wide range of forest management and maintenance activities, using specialist machinery to care for one of the UK’s most iconic landscapes. It offers a multi‑skilled, varied day‑to‑day experience and the chance to make a real environmental and community impact.
Applicants should have at least three years’ experience with heavy plant machinery in forestry, a solid understanding of land‑based health and safety, and demonstrable knowledge of engines, hydraulics and machinery. The role requires a full clean manual driving licence, Emergency First Aid plus F qualification, and the ability to communicate confidently with a diverse range of people.
- Minimum 3 years experience operating heavy plant machinery in forestry or similar settings.
- Strong knowledge of land‑based health and safety, engines, machinery and hydraulics.
- Emergency First Aid plus F qualification and a full clean manual driving licence.
- Practical competence in tractor, telehandler, FMO base unit/skidder, pesticide application (PA1 & PA6), pole saw, strimmer, side‑arm flail, excavator operations and chainsaw cross‑cutting (up to 380 cm).
- Effective communicator, confident, friendly, approachable and able to work with diverse people.
- Team‑oriented, adaptable, independent when required, highly organised with attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
- Physically fit for outdoor work in all weather conditions.
