Description

The Line & Grade Instrument Man II uses surveying equipment to ensure accurate layout of work, coordinating with the Party Chief, Superintendent and foremen. The role supports project management through daily observations, communication, and conflict resolution related to tolerances and constructability, while contributing to safety and the IIF culture.

• Maintain all physical site dimensions and controls accurately.
• Layout building locations, structures, and dimensions throughout the project.
• Establish primary survey points and transfer building control in coordination with the client.
• Set up secondary control and communicate procedures to work crews.
• Implement layout methods and verify accuracy through checks.
• Provide data to the Party Chief for defining points in a data collector.
• Calculate and monitor daily concrete hold quantities.
• Coordinate project layout communication with Party Chief, Superintendent, foremen, and other trades.
• Act as Party Chief on smaller projects when needed.
• Set up and verify surveying equipment accuracy using pegging, double centering, or other methods.
• Validate calculations and information supplied by the Party Chief or Superintendent.
• Review construction documents for accuracy, deviations, and conflicts; issue clarification requests.
• Collaborate with leadership and trades to resolve constructability conflicts.
• Supply layout information to the Formwork Engineering department for shop drawings.
• Maintain field notes and layout documentation.
• Identify discrepancies in construction drawings and communicate changes.
• Manage technical drawings, as‑builts, and clarification logs.
• Apply and determine the most stringent construction tolerances.
• Follow safety guidelines, wear PPE, and stay aware of surroundings.
• Participate in Tool Box Talks and contribute to Safety Task Analysis.
• Comply with all safety procedures.
• Respond effectively to customer or regulatory inquiries and complaints.
• Calculate proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, and apply geometry and trigonometry.
• Work respectfully and effectively with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and clients.
• Serve as a team player who shares information, resolves conflict, and provides feedback.

Requirements

Req ID 7075. The position allows up to 25% travel and has one opening.

• Hold a high school diploma with at least four years of construction experience, or an equivalent education/experience mix.
• Have a minimum of two years' experience as a Line & Grade Instrument Man I.
• Demonstrate good listening skills and teamwork ability.
• Know industry tolerances and the coordinate system.
• Ability to direct work when required.
