PHIs develop and implement inspection activities, create operational procedures, and assess hazards in residential, commercial, recreational, social and industrial premises. They conduct on‑site assessments of food premises, public institutions, and recreational facilities, ensuring compliance with legislation and preventive health practices while educating clients to achieve and maintain standards.
They prepare and issue orders, manage legal documentation, coordinate with the Legal Division and provincial courts, and may serve as expert witnesses in quasi‑judicial inquiries. PHIs also review land redevelopment applications, advise architects and contractors on compliance, and handle non‑compliance actions such as serving Provincial Offences notices and executing search warrants.
In response to disease outbreaks, PHIs collect samples, interpret laboratory results, and implement control measures. They investigate animal‑to‑human bite complaints, ensure rabies immunization compliance, and provide public education on rabies. Additionally, they develop community health programs such as Dine Safe, Eat Smart, and no‑smoking initiatives, and present information to community groups and inter‑departmental committees.
PHIs mentor student inspectors, provide orientation, training, and performance evaluations, and assist with the development of in‑service sessions. They conduct district studies, special surveys, and contribute to the drafting of new bylaws, policies, and procedures while maintaining up‑to‑date technical knowledge through education and conferences.
Candidates must hold a university degree in Science, Health Sciences or a related discipline, a Canadian Certificate in Public Health Inspection in good standing, and relevant experience in public health inspections. A valid Ontario Class "G" driver’s licence, strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, are required.
