Senior Survey Crew Chief

Description

The Senior Survey Crew Chief will primarily lead survey crews in the field by providing topographic, boundary and construction surveys on various civil engineering projects, including highway and urban roadway projects. The role involves writing legal descriptions, certifying right‑of‑way and subdivision plats, and performing title and deed searches to meet professional land‑surveying standards. This position reports to the Transportation Group Leader and is based in Fargo, ND.

• Conduct plane and geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right‑of‑way, and control projects.
• Collect field data using conventional surveying and GPS methods.
• Research existing records such as maps, plans, deeds, and easements.
• Prepare and review legal descriptions for right‑of‑way documents and subdivision plats.
• Produce accurate field notes, drawings, and update conditions on site.
• Delegate survey tasks to crew chiefs or technicians under supervision.
• Follow state and public agency surveying methods and standards.
• Participate in pre‑survey planning meetings with project managers and engineers.
• Communicate effectively with contractors, engineering staff, and project owners.
• Uphold company handbook, safety policies, and ethical standards.
• Perform complex surveying calculations using engineering calculators and computers.

Requirements

The role requires independent judgment, strong communication with contractors, engineers, and owners, and adherence to company policies and safety standards. The incumbent may progress to project and client management responsibilities, including budgeting and financial performance.

Applicants must hold a Professional Land Surveyor license in North Dakota or Minnesota, have at least ten years of topographic and highway/roadway construction staking experience, and be proficient with GPS, robotic total stations, and related software. Strong written and verbal skills, detail orientation, and a valid driver’s license are also required.

The job involves regular outdoor work, standing and walking for extended periods, and lifting equipment up to 75 lb. Candidates must be able to work both independently and as part of a team, and travel or work overtime during construction seasons.

• Hold a Professional Land Surveyor license in ND or MN.
• Minimum 10 years of topographic and highway/roadway construction staking experience.
• Proficient with GPS, robotic total stations, and coordinate geometry software.
• Familiarity with NDDOT survey data collection methods preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational abilities.
• Valid driver’s license (or ability to obtain).
• Operate a computer under normal ergonomic conditions.
• Work outdoors with prolonged standing and walking.
• Lift equipment or objects weighing 50‑75 lb.
