Control & Protection Application Engineer

Description

The Control and Protection System Application Engineer reports to the Control & Protection System Application Manager and joins a dynamic team designing control and protection functions for LCC and VSC HVDC schemes. The role involves studying existing MATLAB/Simulink designs, converting them to PSCAD, creating plant models, test harnesses, and documentation, and evaluating performance throughout the delivery lifecycle.

• Define control system requirements for tenders, operations, contracts, and after‑sales support.
• Model HVDC plants in PSCAD, EMTP‑RV and verify designs using MATLAB/Simulink.
• Conduct dynamic performance studies and other design analyses with offline and online simulators.
• Tune control and protection parameters to satisfy grid stability criteria in customer specifications.
• Convert MATLAB/Simulink algorithms into PSCAD models and create test harnesses.
• Write model guides and evaluate PSCAD simulations throughout the delivery lifecycle.
• Improve algorithms for power‑fault recovery and instability mitigation during performance studies.
• Develop new control, protection, and start‑up/shut‑down sequencing strategies as required.
• Lead continuous‑improvement initiatives by introducing tools, methods, and process enhancements.
• Promote reusable solutions and standard product methodology to reduce delivery time and cost.

Requirements

• Hold an engineering degree with power systems/electronics focus or equivalent HVDC experience.
• Demonstrate strong urgency, risk management, and ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
• Communicate effectively in written and verbal form, producing technical reports and client presentations.
• Understand customer requirements, lead technical discussions, and build client relationships.
• Proficient in PSCAD and MATLAB/Simulink; experienced with power‑system analysis tools such as PowerFactory, PSS/E, ETAP, or EMTDC‑RV.
• Flexible work hours and willingness to travel globally to support projects.
