The Journeyman Helper will assist the journeyman in planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of all construction‑related systems and components, ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. This role requires close collaboration with installation crews, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to take direction from higher‑skilled workers or foremen.
This is a full‑time position typically scheduled for 50 hours per week, with the possibility of shift work, overtime, and schedule adjustments based on project requirements. The role may involve working under production pressure and adhering to set standards of accuracy.
- Read and interpret measuring tools such as tape measure, speed square, and framing square to perform tasks accurately.
- Perform tasks including threading, beveling, and cutting pipe.
- Assist in installing valves, couplings, and other fittings; disassemble and remove damaged or worn pipe.
- Produce quality work meeting plans, specifications, and industry standards.
- Closely interact with installation crews for movement of materials and equipment.
- Perform daily safety checks to ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Take direction from a higher‑skilled worker or foreman.
- Support the project with other tasks as directed by supervision.
- Communicate with the foreman regarding problems, material needs, or hazards.
- Attain set standards of accuracy.
- Participate actively in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
- Set a personal example of safe behavior.

The job demands up to 12‑hour shifts of hard physical work in varying temperatures and outdoor conditions, requiring strength to lift and carry objects up to 50 lb and the ability to navigate confined, uneven, or elevated spaces while wearing required personal protective equipment. Workers must maintain good balance, visual and auditory acuity, and coordinate eye‑hand‑foot movements safely.
- Fully understand Plant North and drawing coordinates.
- Use appropriate hand and power tools to fit and install various pipe and tubular products; possess working knowledge of pipe systems and joint types.
- Possess basic knowledge of heavy industrial construction processes.
- Ability to work different shifts and overtime as required.
- 2–3 years related experience or training, or equivalent education/experience.
- High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
- Experience working in construction craft roles as a helper or laborer with basic craft knowledge.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Knowledge of MIC Health and Safety programs and project‑specific regulations.
- Proficient in one or more craft areas.
- Ability to compute basic numbers, read scales, and use simple fractions.
- Ability to work well under pressure and within timelines.
- Developing knowledge in fabrication, installation, or maintenance of construction components and systems testing; familiarity with applicable codes.
- Ability to understand and follow directions; possess required tools.
