Nationwide engineering firm specializing in relay testing, commissioning, and equipment testing
The role involves commissioning, testing, maintenance, and repair of complex protective relaying schemes across generation, transmission, and distribution substations. The engineer must operate various electrical test equipment such as Omicron, Doble, Vanguard, and interface with software like Test Universe, Protection Suite, AcSELerator, and Wireshark. They also facilitate retrofits, upgrades, and replacements of electrical controls, SCADA, DCS, and power system protection equipment.
Key duties include testing over‑current, directional, distance, impedance, and multifunction relays, performing function testing of control circuits, and executing isolation, setpoint, advanced logic, and scheme tests such as reclosing and breaker failure. The engineer conducts end‑to‑end relay testing using Doble Protection Suite, RTS, or Test Universe to verify communication‑assisted protection schemes, and installs, commissions, and maintains protective relaying, DFR, SCADA, distribution automation, and related communication systems. They also assist in writing standard procedures and generate customer reports detailing problems and corrective actions while maintaining a professional demeanor with vendors and customers.
Qualified candidates have at least five years of field experience with substation relay commissioning, calibration, testing, and repair, and a solid understanding of three‑phase power systems, protection, and control schemes. They should be familiar with protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 8979, and be able to troubleshoot SCADA issues using tools like Wireshark and ASE 2000. Strong interpersonal, communication, and Microsoft Office skills are required, as well as a valid driver’s license and the ability to recognize wire and fiber‑optic color coding.
