Principal, Single-Family Studio

Description

This position will be responsible for the supervision of Associate Principals, Designers, and Project Managers.

Reporting to the CEO, the Principal of the Single-Family Studio is responsible for operations, staff performance, financial profitability, staff development and growth of his/her group, consistent with LDI’s polices and approved business plan. Oversee the Group’s Associate Principals, Designers and Project Managers and assure technical and financial performance of all projects to meet Quality & Cost Assurance standards. Oversee the Group’s organizational staff development and administer LDI’s policies and programs.

• Market LDI’s services in coordination with other Senior Principals and Principals.
• Develop work scopes, prepare budgets, and ensure quality assurance for all assigned projects.
• Review and support the development of Project Management Plans.
• Administer career development plans, quarterly Intern Development Program, and annual evaluations.
• Respond to construction administration queries requiring resolution by architects, engineers, or contractors.
• Recruit, train, and supervise Group personnel; develop successors for key roles.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships, serving as a Client Sponsor.
• Conduct programming and feasibility studies.
• Increase LDI’s competitive position through strategic initiatives.
• Write contracts and proposal agreements with Project Managers to define fees, schedules, and terms.
• Review and approve all Group bids, proposals, and contracts for accuracy and profitability.
• Stamp and seal drawings as a licensed architect; obtain additional licenses as needed.
• Produce high-quality designs that meet client expectations without compromising profitability.
• Assist in design, production, and construction administration to ensure accuracy and coordination.
• Manage personnel decisions including hiring, termination, promotions, and salary reviews.
• Develop and implement the Group’s business plan to strengthen market position.
• Ensure compliance with state/local codes and accessibility requirements.
• Develop new business opportunities and maintain client relationships in line with the business plan.
• Negotiate Group contracts and budgets to ensure financial sustainability.
• Approve Group billings, manage variances, and recommend write-offs or credits.
• Maintain target labor utilization and coordinate with other leadership roles.
• Mentor Group management in technical, administrative, financial, and marketing areas.
• Negotiate bid pricing, work scope, and terms in alignment with company policies.
• Monitor and achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the Group and self.

Requirements

This position will require up to 50% local travel

• Code & Compliance Knowledge: Deep understanding of state/local building codes, accessibility standards, and professional ethics in architecture.
• Architectural License: Required license in all states where projects are located
• Judgment & Decision-Making: Exercises sound judgment, discretion, and reasoning in dynamic, deadline-driven environments.
• Leadership & Initiative: Demonstrates strong leadership, problem-solving, and motivational skills; self-starter who thrives without micromanagement.
• Education: Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS), preferably in Architecture, or related field
• Relationship Building: Builds trust and influence across all organizational levels; experienced in negotiation and conflict resolution.
• Creative & Aesthetic Sensibility: Possesses a strong aesthetic sense and a genuine interest in the arts.
• Demonstrate leadership by facing challenges, solving problems, and motivating teams.
• Communication & Presentation: Skilled in persuasive communication with clients, teams, and public audiences; fluent in spoken and written English.
• Detail-Oriented & Organized: Highly observant with strong attention to detail, document review skills, and disciplined organizational habits.
• Experience: 15+ year’s exp. in Single-Family/Townhome projects. Proven Business Development experience is a must
• Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in REVIT, MS Office required, Photoshop and/or InDesign a plus
