Key responsibilities include directing crew productivity, safety and quality while installing, removing and bracing poles; coordinating work with other utilities and contractors; interpreting blueprints, schematics and feeder maps; and delivering construction prints to builders. The mechanic also performs switching, phasing and grounding of circuits, investigates service failures, makes emergency repairs, replaces equipment such as fuses, transformers and reclosers, and serves as a field ambassador for customer interactions.
Additional duties involve conducting feeder patrols, preparing sketches and reports, installing capacitors, regulators and telecommunications gear, splicing and terminating cables in trenches or ducts, and training lower‑classified employees per Overhead Progression Program guidelines. The role requires the use of specialized tools, aerial lifts, excavation equipment and hazardous‑material handling, as well as accurate completion of timesheets and inspection reports.
The Journey Line Mechanic (Journey Line) builds on the Apprentice Line Mechanic Primary role and leads a single crew in constructing and maintaining overhead and underground (URD) distribution systems up to 600 V. The position is part of the Overhead Progression Program, which requires testing and up-or-out advancement.
Minimum qualifications are demonstrated experience as an Apprentice Line Mechanic Primary, knowledge of transmission and distribution specifications, ability to read construction drawings and follow safety regulations, and required licenses (Class A restricted CDL, Class 7‑D operating engineer, flagger certification). Strong verbal and written communication, IT proficiency and willingness to work overtime and be on call are also required. Preferred qualifications and additional certifications are a plus.
Compensation includes an hourly rate starting at $55.69, a 4 % annual bonus, 401(k) match, medical/dental/vision coverage, life and disability insurance, generous paid time off, parental leave, employee assistance, tuition reimbursement, fitness reimbursement and a referral bonus. Benefits may vary based on service length, job grade or union status.
