Senior Accountant

Description

The Senior Trade Accountant is a key member of the trade accounting team, reporting directly to the SVP of Trade Accounting. This role will sit within a global energy and commodities trading business with a diversified portfolio across physical and financial markets. The Senior Trade Accountant will work closely with front, middle, and back-office teams to reconcile activity, analyze complex commodity transactions, and ensure accurate financial reporting across multiple trading books.

Monthly Close & Reconciliations

• Support the preparation of monthly P&L, balance sheet, and expense reports for management.
• Participate in ad hoc projects related to process improvement, system enhancements, or new product accounting.
• Analyze financially and physically settled commodity contracts (e.g., natural gas, crude oil, refined products) to determine proper accounting treatment under IFRS and/or US GAAP.
• Prepare trade accounting schedules (e.g., inventory, financial instruments) for statutory and financial reporting.
• Assist in developing and maintaining SOX-compliant processes and internal controls.
• Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, and policies regarding financial reporting of derivative contracts.
• Perform monthly reconciliations between trading systems and the general ledger across multiple trading books.
• Evaluate new accounting standards or regulatory changes for impact on the organization.
• Contribute to the documentation and enhancement of financial policies and procedures.
• Provide support to external auditors, including work papers and explanations of accounting treatments.
• Prepare related journal entries and follow up with front-, middle-, and back-office teams to resolve reconciliation differences and outstanding accruals.
• Assist in the preparation of audited financial statements.

Requirements

• Strong foundation in energy accounting, including experience with physical commodities, revenue recognition, inventory, and cost-of-goods-sold processes.
• Solid understanding of energy contract structures (e.g., natural gas, crude oil, NGLs, refined products) and related operational/financial flows.
• Experience with general ledger systems, month-end close cycles, reconciliations, and analytical review of financial results.
• Ability to interpret and apply relevant IFRS and/or US GAAP standards (experience with ASC 815/IFRS 9 is beneficial but not required).
• 4+ years experience in relevant experience
