Control Systems Engineer - Submarines

Description

You will design and implement complex control system solutions, develop software modules, and create detailed hardware designs for new production and experimental test facilities. The position also includes problem‑solving during integration testing, supporting commissioning teams, preparing technical reports, and providing technical support to the supply chain while managing project cost and schedule.

• Design and implement complex control system solutions meeting high‑level requirements and standards.
• Develop software modules from philosophy documents and modernise legacy control systems.
• Create detailed hardware designs from concept documents (P&IDs, equipment schedules) for new installations and upgrades.
• Identify and resolve issues during integration testing and support commissioning activities.
• Produce technical reports and documentation in line with engineering best practice.
• Provide technical support to the supply chain, assess components and update design definitions.
• Manage project planning to ensure cost and schedule adherence.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has hands‑on experience with industrial control systems and IT/OT networks, preferably in manufacturing or the nuclear sector, and familiarity with Rockwell/Allen‑Bradley platforms. Required skills include specifying and designing control hardware, using change/configuration management tools, and proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD Electrical or E‑Plan, together with knowledge of relevant IEC standards.

A degree or equivalent professional accreditation in Controls, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation or Software is required, along with membership of a professional engineering institution and progression toward Chartered status. • Hands‑on experience with industrial control systems and IT/OT networks, preferably in manufacturing or nuclear sectors.
• Familiarity with Rockwell/Allen‑Bradley control systems (advantageous).
• Ability to specify and design control hardware, including various I/O signal interfaces.
• Knowledge of change/configuration management tools and design software such as AutoCAD Electrical or E‑Plan.
• Understanding of IEC standards (Machinery Directive, BS7671, IEC 61131, IEC 61508/61511).
• Proactive, self‑starting attitude and ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
• Degree or equivalent accreditation in Controls, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation or Software; professional engineering institution membership and progress toward Chartered status.
