Building Inspector I (FT - On-Site)

Description

• Perform field inspections of residential and limited commercial structures at various construction stages.
• Investigate and report code violations.
• Provide code interpretation to clients, building professionals, and the public.
• Resolve problems, set priorities, and read/interpret building plans and specifications.
• Detect deviations from plans and maintain accurate records.
• Manage multiple tasks simultaneously while ensuring attention to detail.
• Collaborate effectively with government entities, contractors, and professional clientele.
• Follow oral and written directions and perform related duties as required.

Requirements

The Building Inspector reports to the Building Official or Building Inspector Supervisor and inspects residential and limited commercial structures throughout construction. The role requires knowledge of building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical codes and ordinances, and the ability to review construction plans.

The position involves extensive physical exertion on site, requiring flexibility, the ability to stand, bend, stoop, reach, crouch, climb, and lift up to 35 pounds. Inspectors must travel to client or job sites, work in various weather conditions, and may work in elevated, noisy, or dark environments. The role also includes periods of computer work and occasional overtime.

• Hold an ICC Building Inspector certification or one ICC trade‑specific certification (plumbing, electrical, or mechanical), with licenses maintained.
• At least 1 year of building inspection experience (or 3+ years in construction) with a private or public agency.
• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
