The Substation Technician Learner supports higher‑level technicians in substation construction and maintenance, developing intermediate technical and leadership skills. Over time, the role evolves to independently manage small, low‑to‑moderate complexity projects.
Key responsibilities include strict adherence to safety and human performance practices, organizing and executing construction and maintenance plans, reading and interpreting schematics, and safely isolating protection circuits. The incumbent also performs equipment testing, infrared scanning, and documentation to meet NERC/SERC regulatory requirements.
Required qualifications are a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of related transmission or distribution substation experience. Preferred credentials include an associate’s degree in engineering technology and a Class A commercial driver’s license, with the expectation that a CDL will be obtained within one year of hire.
The position demands physical stamina: ability to stand for 5‑6 hours, sit for 2‑3 hours, lift up to 75 lb, climb, and operate aerial devices. Candidates must reside within 45 minutes of the assigned site, be prepared for 15‑25 % travel, and may need to relocate at personal expense, with possible relocation assistance.
