High School Work-Based Learning Intern – MakerSpace

Description

The internship follows an 8‑hour non‑rotating shift, with hours recorded via punch‑in/out during the fall calendar; the shift begins in the morning and is designed to accommodate school commitments.

• Support MakerSpace and Shaw Technical Academy staff in daily operations.
• Setup and maintain 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and other fabrication tools.
• Assist Shaw associates and Early Careers Interns/Co‑Ops with MakerSpace projects and troubleshooting.
• Participate in design and prototyping activities under supervision of project leads.
• Maintain a safe, clean workspace and manage inventory according to safety protocols.
• Document projects and create simple guides or instructions for future users.
• Develop project‑management abilities by organizing materials, documenting processes, and creating instructional guides.
• Collaborate in a team environment with peers and professionals.
• Enhance problem‑solving by identifying and resolving technical issues during prototyping.
• Maintain safety and compliance by keeping a safe workspace and following protocols.

Requirements

The High School Work‑Based Learning Intern – MakerSpace provides a senior‑year high school student with hands‑on experience in a collaborative, creative environment. Interns assist with design, prototyping, and innovation projects using advanced tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines, making it ideal for students interested in STEM, engineering, design, or manufacturing careers.

• Currently enrolled in a high school Work‑Based Learning program.
• Enrolled or completed a high school pathway related to manufacturing, engineering, design, or similar experience (e.g., robotics team).
• Basic computer skills with familiarity in industrial design software such as CAD.
• Self‑motivated with strong organizational and time‑management abilities.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to follow instructions and work independently when needed.
• Must be at least 17 years old and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Part‑time: Approximately 15–20 hours per week during the school term.
• Career pathways include Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, Product Design and Development, Robotics and Automation, CAD Design and Drafting, and Technical Support and Maintenance.
• Exposure to advanced manufacturing and design technologies.
