The Gas Directional Drill Operator/Locator is tasked with safely operating a directional drill and locating underground utilities to install and service mainline conduit via horizontal directional drilling (HDD). The role supports the line team, prepares jobs for safe bore shots, and makes depth decisions to avoid utility strikes. Collaboration with crew members and adherence to best practices are essential for successful bore completions.
- Operate the directional drill rig efficiently and safely.
- Prepare jobs and equipment for bore shots, including potholing and verifying utilities.
- Fill water tanks and mix appropriate chemicals for bore fluid based on ground conditions.
- Locate the drill head from start to end point, maintaining correct depth to avoid utilities.
- Install swivel, reamer, and pipe product, and develop a utility‑avoidance plan before drilling.
- Pull back product using the proper hole opener and mud mixture to complete the bore.
- Inspect, maintain, and regularly service the rig and associated equipment.
- Provide assistance and on‑the‑job training to drilling trainees.
- Follow best practices for utility verification and read blueprints.
- Record drill logs and related documentation.

The position is field‑based and requires frequent bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lb, and working in extreme weather conditions. Workers must maintain clear vision at various distances, possess precise hand‑eye coordination, and be able to differentiate colors. Physical stamina and safety awareness are critical to performing the essential functions.
- High school diploma or equivalent (minimum).
- 1 year of relevant experience (minimum).
- Valid CDL Class A with tanker endorsement (minimum).
- OSHA 10 certification (minimum).
- 5+ years of experience (preferred).
- Operated Vermeer or Ditchwitch directional drills (preferred).
- Used Subsite or Digitrack locating equipment (preferred).
