The Sr. Relay Technician leads and supervises electrical testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relays in substations, using relay test equipment to install, commission, and function‑test control circuits, relays, transformers, and circuit breakers. The role also involves analyzing protection schemes, event records, and developing execution and energization procedures while managing large‑scale projects and serving as the on‑site lead interfacing with customers.
- Lead safety briefings on job site, identify, eliminate, or mitigate hazards
- Utilize Human Performance Error Elimination concepts and tools
- Analyze protection schemes for power circuits and other power system components
- Perform installation, commissioning, testing, and function testing of substation control circuits on relay panels, transformers, and circuit breaker change‑outs
- Analyze event records and make informed deductions
- Develop project execution, commissioning, outage sequence, and energization procedures
- Manage large‑scale and complex projects
- Train and qualify Relay Technician I, II, or Relay Engineer I
- Interact with customers
- Perform complex troubleshooting
- Conduct end‑to‑end relay testing using relay test software and analyze operation based on fault type
- Lead investigations of electrical issues, including root‑cause analysis
- Calibrate and perform functional tests on electromechanical and microprocessor protective relays
- Serve as on‑site lead, assign tasks, prioritize activities and interface with customers
- Read and interpret protection and control schematics, identifying design errors
- Determine and interpret customer requirements and deliver as‑built prints and test results
- Troubleshoot distribution and transmission control circuits

- Understand manufacturers’ literature to facilitate testing
- Pass a pre‑employment drug screen and satisfactory criminal background check
- Ability to work overtime and travel out of town; maintain a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
- Hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing protective relays in transmission, generation, or distribution substations
- Knowledge of relay test software
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, or similar equipment
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in electrical/electronic technology, military experience, or 4‑year engineering degree (preferred)
- 5+ years relevant industry experience
- NETA III/IV certification (preferred)
- Ability to climb ladders, stand for extended periods, and lift up to 70 lb
