The Principal Civil Engineer role focuses on data centre projects, providing technical leadership from site due‑diligence and master‑planning through detailed design and construction support. The position sits within the Civil Engineering Business Unit and works closely with ground, structural, mechanical, electrical engineers, architects, project managers, and surveyors in the UK and overseas.
Key responsibilities include strategic civil engineering leadership, technical governance, and ensuring compliance with AECOM standards and regulations. The incumbent will lead the review and approval of infrastructure designs, develop buildable solutions for earthworks, drainage, pavements, access, and utilities, and coordinate multidisciplinary teams to deliver resilient data centre facilities.
Candidates must hold a degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline and be a Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE) or equivalent. They should have extensive experience delivering complex civil infrastructure projects, preferably in data centres or mission‑critical environments, strong knowledge of planning, highways, drainage, and utility approvals, a proven design‑lead track record, and familiarity with BIM modelling and collaborative platforms.
The role also supports client engagement, business development, and sector thought leadership while mentoring civil engineers to strengthen technical capability across the data centre market.
