The Senior Construction Inspector provides advanced field inspection, documentation, and quality oversight on CTDOT highway, bridge, facility, building, and railroad projects, ensuring work complies with contract documents, codes, agency standards, and safety requirements while serving as a technical resource to the Resident Engineer and mentoring junior staff.
The role requires working in active construction environments—uneven terrain, heights, excavations, and varied weather—and may involve nights, weekends, or off-hours for traffic shifts, track outages, or building shutdowns.
- Inspect construction work for compliance with plans, specifications, shop drawings, CTDOT standards, railroad requirements, and applicable codes.
- Observe highway/bridge, building/facilities, and rail/transit activities, including earthwork, concrete, steel, utilities, MPT, roofing, and renovations.
- Monitor contractor adherence to environmental permits, work‑zone safety, railroad safety rules, OSHA requirements, and PPE protocols.
- Identify non‑conforming work and coordinate corrective actions with contractors and the Resident Engineer.
- Perform or witness required materials testing and special inspections.
- Prepare daily inspection reports, photographic documentation, and progress summaries.
- Measure, calculate, and verify quantities of installed, delivered, or stored materials.
- Maintain field documentation using electronic systems such as AASHTOWare, COMPASS, ProjectWise, or SharePoint.
- Coordinate with Resident Engineers, project engineers, contractors, CTDOT staff, railroad representatives, municipalities, and other stakeholders.
- Participate in project meetings, report field conditions, and track action items.
- Assist with RFIs, resolve field issues, and support change orders and extra work.
- Provide technical input on constructability challenges and engineering issues.
- Mentor and oversee junior inspectors and field staff.
- Support contract administration, documentation, and verification activities for the Resident Engineer.

- Field inspection experience on transportation, building/vertical construction, rail infrastructure, or civil projects.
- Working knowledge of CTDOT Form 819, building and fire codes, railroad safety procedures, and public‑sector construction contracts.
- Familiarity with construction materials, methods, and major trades (structural, architectural, MEP, utilities, roadway, bridge, rail).
- Strong ability to interpret plans and specifications.
- Proficiency with digital construction documentation systems.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, architecture, engineering technology, or related field plus 4 years experience; or High School diploma with NICET Level III or relevant trade license plus 6 years experience.
- Preferred certifications: NICET Level III/IV, ACI, NETTCP, ATSSA, OSHA 10‑ or 30‑hour.
- Ability to work in active construction environments, including uneven terrain, heights, excavations, and varied weather conditions.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, or off‑hours for traffic shifts, track outages, or building shutdowns.
