Description

The Production Engineer serves as the process expert, designing and developing new fuel‑cell manufacturing processes and equipment, driving automation and productivity gains, and reviewing design drawings, specifications, and control plans. Collaboration with value‑stream team members—including quality, product, and industrial engineers—focuses on continuous improvement of safety, cost, quality, capacity, and yields.

• Design, develop, and implement new fuel‑cell manufacturing processes and automation equipment.
• Review and approve engineering drawings, material specifications, and control plans.
• Lead value‑stream mapping, PFMEA, risk assessments, and process documentation.
• Manage equipment projects from specification through procurement, budgeting, and release to operations.
• Drive continuous‑improvement initiatives to reduce costs, enhance part quality, and improve ergonomics.
• Analyze process data to increase yields and identify root causes of production issues.
• Participate on cross‑functional teams with R&D, Production Development, Facilities, and EHS.
• Serve as manufacturing liaison to Design Engineering and R&D during product and process trials.
• Create work instructions and operational control plans for the shop floor.
• Support safety assessments in accordance with NFPA codes and OSHA regulations.

Requirements

The role is based in the Torrington factory, requiring a minimum 40‑hour workweek, Monday‑Friday, with up to 10 % domestic travel and occasional international trips. The position involves working in a 200,000‑sq‑ft cement‑floored facility, handling parts over 25 lb, and operating safely around chemicals, high‑temperature furnaces, and required personal protective equipment.

• Hold a BS or MS in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Materials, Electrical preferred).
• Possess at least 3 years of relevant commercial experience, including semi‑automated large‑part assembly.
• Demonstrated track record of process/equipment implementation and continuous‑improvement execution.
• Proficient with MS Office; experienced with LEAN tools (Six Sigma, Gemba walks, 5S, PDCA).
• Skilled in 3D modeling (SolidWorks), PLC/HMI/ERP controls, and statistical process control.
• Experience with capital equipment procurement, risk management, ISO 9001, and automation a plus.
