The role involves working on bridge projects—including steel plate girder, prestressed concrete, segmental, and cable bridges—as well as box culverts and highway or railway interchanges. Engineers will apply structural engineering and detailing techniques, select appropriate design procedures, and develop detailed models using specialized software.
- Participate in bridge inspection, perform structural load calculations, and assist with geometric layout and quantity development
- Apply structural engineering and detailing techniques in the development of bridge designs
- Work on projects that typically include bridges (steel plate girder, prestressed concrete, segmental and cable), box culverts, and interchange design for highway and railway projects
- Select standard bridge engineering and design procedures, and develop structural details using specialized software
- Develop structural details using basic structural design and analysis software

Each role at HDR contributes to making a positive difference globally. HDR is seeking a Bridge EIT/Designer to join its Transportation Business Group in North Carolina, with the position based in either Raleigh or Charlotte.
Candidates should hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in structural engineering or a related field, possess an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certificate or be able to obtain one, and have experience with bridge and structural design. Proficiency with MS Office, MathCAD, AutoCAD, LARSA, Prestress Concrete Design, Bentley OpenBridge Designer, and other analysis tools is required, along with strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or a related field
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate or ability to obtain (candidates without will be Bridge Designer and expected to obtain EIT for career progression)
- Experience in bridge/structural design
- Proficiency with MS Office, MathCAD, AutoCAD, LARSA, and Prestress Concrete Design
- Knowledge of Bentley OpenBridge Designer
- Familiarity with engineering software such as MDX and SAP2000
- Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu and engineering software packages such as LEAP Bridge Enterprise, FB‑MultiPier, LPile, AASHTOWare BrR, midas Civil, CSiBridge, RM Bridge, spColumn, STLBridgeLRFD, or STLBridge
- Experience with Bentley OpenBridge Modeler and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3D
- Strong understanding and hands‑on use of computers for structural layout and design
- Good communication skills and willingness to work in a team environment
