The Maintenance Supervisor role identifies and verifies required maintenance work, interprets contracts, schedules and coordinates in‑house or subcontractor activities, and ensures all work meets contract specifications in a timely, efficient and profitable manner. This position also provides direct supervision of maintenance crews and offers a competitive salary ranging from $70,000 to $80,000 per year.
Key duties include performing condition assessments of pavements, signs, guardrails, tunnels, bridges, vegetation and other assets; planning and coordinating work while deciding between self‑performance and subcontracting; inspecting ongoing and completed tasks for compliance; managing fleet inspection and repairs; overseeing project assets, materials and consumable inventory; and identifying opportunities for process and cost improvements. Additional responsibilities involve creating and closing work orders, reviewing highway damage claims, maintaining accurate documentation, liaising with ministry staff, contractors, agencies and the public, assisting the Contract Manager with subcontractor qualification and negotiations, and participating in emergency response rotations.
The role requires strong basic math skills, effective communication, the ability to read and interpret contracts and technical documents, and proficiency in writing reports and presenting information. Candidates must be adept at problem‑solving, multitasking, and using MS Excel, Word and internet resources, while demonstrating a highly developed sense of safety, enforcing PPE use and leading by example.
Applicants need a high school diploma, a minimum of five years’ experience in construction or road maintenance, prior supervisory experience, and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Work conditions split time between office and field environments, demanding physical activities such as standing, walking, climbing, lifting up to 50 lb, and operating various powered tools. The field setting exposes employees to diverse weather conditions, moderate to high noise levels, and occasional contact with chemicals, while the office setting requires extended periods of sitting.
