The Underground Groundman is an entry‑level position focused on the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. Work locations vary and may require travel to other states depending on customer demands.
The role involves safely performing new construction, maintenance, and repair on both energized and de‑energized underground work, including setting pad‑mount transformers and working around high‑voltage systems. The employee maintains company vehicles, equipment, and tools, performs rigorous physical labor, and uses company radios, basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knots.
Additional duties include assisting with the installation and hookup of single‑phase transformers, conducting basic bucket‑rescue/escape procedures, setting up grounding, working at heights or in confined spaces, and adhering to minimum approach distances, excavation, and shoring requirements. The Groundman also checks voltage on transformers, installs and removes services, inspects PPE, climbs various structures, works in trenches and manholes, and operates in all weather conditions.
No prior experience is required; candidates must read and communicate effectively in English and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit within 60 days of hire (CDL preferred). The position demands the ability to lift over 50 lb, travel long distances on short notice, and work extended periods at various locations, with willingness to work overtime, weekends, and holidays.
Physical demands include regular talking, hearing, standing, walking, using hands, and reaching, with exposure to fumes, noise, vibration, and extreme outdoor conditions. Competencies sought are self‑motivation, team orientation, and customer orientation, while adherence to safety rules and company policies is mandatory.
