Founded over a century ago by philanthropist Joseph Rowntree, the trust was set up to build and manage New Earswick, a pioneering model village in York.
As an exempt charity operating in partnership with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, it owns and manages around 2,600 homes—building a future community while stewarding a historic one.

An unusual legacy: it originated in the early 1900s trait of creating self‑governing, green communities free of the stigma of charity, and remains rooted in that ethos today.
