The Arborist role in New York City involves working outdoors on projects for NYC Parks across all five boroughs, supporting the city’s tree preservation and street‑tree programs while collaborating with other city agencies on urban forest and natural system initiatives.
The successful candidate will apply technical expertise to guide tree preservation efforts, serve as an ambassador for the urban forest, and engage with contractors, residents, and agency personnel to ensure project success.
- Maintain daily records and review inspection reports from field personnel.
- Utilize the City’s ForMS program and act as an ambassador for the urban forest.
- Monitor contractor compliance with technical requirements and responsiveness.
- Communicate effectively with clients, local agencies, and community stakeholders.
- Administer health and safety procedures as outlined in the H&S manual.
- Identify invasive plant species during field inspections.
- Conduct field meetings with contractors and owners to discuss progress and schedule.
- Provide administrative support for program operations.
- Read and interpret design plans, specifications, and shop drawing submittals.
- Lead dispute resolution and manage challenging situations on site.
- Operate GIS tools for mapping and data analysis.

Ideal candidates are detail‑oriented, skilled at interpreting design documents, possess strong leadership and dispute‑resolution abilities, are comfortable with overtime, proficient with GIS, and have access to a personal vehicle.
Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in a forestry‑related field and an ISA Arborist, NJ LTE, or ASCA certification; preferred credentials comprise ISA TRAQ, contract supervision experience, and at least one year of practical tree‑care work.
- Possess a personal vehicle for site travel.
- Earn a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Forest Biology, Environmental Resources Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Hold ISA Arborist Certification, NJ Licensed Tree Expert, or ASCA certification.
- Preferred: ISA TRAQ qualification and experience in capital contract supervision oversight.
- Preferred: Experience with woody plant and construction/restoration oversight and tree risk assessment.
- Minimum one year of practical experience in tree protection, pruning, installation, or related work.
