Operations Manager, Food

Description

Responsible for the implementation of primary goals, operating plans, policies, and short and long range objectives for the business unit.

Provides guidance and/or leadership to others, including indirect reports, peers, or managers. Has hiring and terminating responsibilities. Supervises others. Number of employees directly reporting – Supervisory; 1‑5 Non‑Supervisory.

• Ensure the Quality Management System is implemented and maintained per ISO 17025 standards.
• Maintain knowledge of the scope of all processes under supervision.
• Maintain records and manage all testing activities.
• Facilitate operational concerns.
• Coordinate purchasing requests.
• Manage operations to maintain or improve laboratory efficiency and quality.
• Ensure accurate and consistent testing procedures.
• Hire personnel and oversee all employee‑related issues.
• Determine technical training needs of personnel.
• Conduct employee performance reviews and provide ongoing development guidance.
• Maintain a fair and positive work environment.
• Represent the organization to major customers, government agencies, and the public.
• Communicate operational difficulties and delays to the Client Service Department.
• Communicate necessary changes or information to department personnel.
• Respond to customer inquiries and provide professional advice.
• Ensure all health and safety regulations are followed.
• Contribute to and maintain an active safety program for all departments.
• Organize and maintain documentation of all laboratory quality activities.
• Report on the performance of the Quality Management System to senior management.
• Ensure compliance with ISO 17025 standards is maintained.

Requirements

A 4‑year degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Science or a related field (or equivalent experience) is required. Candidates must have at least seven years of operations or management experience and three years in a supervisory role.

Knowledge of LIMS, strong problem‑prevention and solving skills, and effective written and verbal communication across disciplines are also required.
