The role involves performing stress and structural design calculations for B&W equipment, including new builds and retrofits, calculating loads, designing structural components in accordance with applicable codes, and ensuring manufacturability and constructability. The engineer will use hand calculations, commercial design software, and internal programs, assess shop and field issues, prepare project documentation, develop new techniques, assign and direct supporting engineers, and represent Structural Mechanics in project meetings. Additional duties include leading interactions with external customers, serving as a subject matter expert, reviewing scopes, budgets, and schedules, and performing other assigned tasks.
The Principal Engineer 2 for the Structural Mechanics group will independently apply their extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices specific to stress analysis and structural design while working on major projects or multiple projects of moderate size but with complex scope/features. This individual uses advanced engineering analysis methods and techniques and will work both independently and with a group to meet the team’s key objectives. This person is responsible for being a project lead as well as a mentor to less experienced engineers in the department and is expected to become a subject matter expert in multiple areas related to stress analysis and structural design.
Candidates must have at least 10 years of experience and be proficient with Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Caesar II, STAAD, Mathcad, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Ansys Mechanical is preferred, along with working knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, AISC code, and other design codes. Strong oral and written communication, ability to work independently and in teams, multitasking on multiple projects, attention to quality, organizational skills, and experience in environmental equipment design are also required.
