Description

The role involves performing stress and structural design calculations for B&W equipment, including new builds and retrofits, calculating loads, designing structural components in accordance with applicable codes, and ensuring manufacturability and constructability. The engineer will use hand calculations, commercial design software, and internal programs, assess shop and field issues, prepare project documentation, develop new techniques, assign and direct supporting engineers, and represent Structural Mechanics in project meetings. Additional duties include leading interactions with external customers, serving as a subject matter expert, reviewing scopes, budgets, and schedules, and performing other assigned tasks.

• Perform stress and structural design calculations for new and retrofitted B&W equipment.
• Calculate loads (dead, live, seismic, wind, pressure, thermal, static, transient) and determine load distribution and support locations.
• Design structural components for boiler pressure parts, non‑pressure parts, environmental equipment, and piping per applicable codes.
• Ensure designs are manufacturable and constructible.
• Conduct hand calculations and use FEA tools such as Caesar II, STAAD, and Ansys Mechanical, as well as internal programs.
• Assess shop and field issues, providing guidance and modifications as needed.
• Prepare comprehensive project sketches, calculations, and reports for the team.
• Develop new techniques or improve processes and products.
• Assign tasks and direct supporting engineers, including offshore partners.
• Plan and coordinate detailed aspects of engineering work.
• Mentor and train less‑experienced engineers.
• Represent Structural Mechanics in project meetings and lead external customer, A/E, vendor, and sub‑contractor interactions.
• Serve as Subject Matter Expert responding to technical inquiries.
• Review project scope, budgets, and schedules for assignments.

Requirements

The Principal Engineer 2 for the Structural Mechanics group will independently apply their extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices specific to stress analysis and structural design while working on major projects or multiple projects of moderate size but with complex scope/features. This individual uses advanced engineering analysis methods and techniques and will work both independently and with a group to meet the team’s key objectives. This person is responsible for being a project lead as well as a mentor to less experienced engineers in the department and is expected to become a subject matter expert in multiple areas related to stress analysis and structural design.

Candidates must have at least 10 years of experience and be proficient with Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Caesar II, STAAD, Mathcad, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Ansys Mechanical is preferred, along with working knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, AISC code, and other design codes. Strong oral and written communication, ability to work independently and in teams, multitasking on multiple projects, attention to quality, organizational skills, and experience in environmental equipment design are also required.

• Minimum 10 + years of engineering experience.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience with Caesar II, STAAD, Mathcad, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Ansys Mechanical (preferred).
• Working knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, AISC code, and other applicable design codes; international codes a plus.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external clients.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Experience in environmental equipment design (preferred).
