The Design Engineer plays a crucial role in creating and executing overhead and underground electric projects for utility clients using specialized engineering software. This position requires a strong understanding of electric utility design standards and the ability to perform fieldwork, develop construction cost estimates, and ensure compliance with safety codes and regulations. The Design Engineer is also responsible for supporting client training and interacting effectively with both internal teams and utility customers to deliver high-quality solutions.

  • Support Client Success: Provide training and support on GSI’s proprietary DDS software to empower clients in utilizing design tools effectively.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and utility clients to ensure project success.
  • Handle additional duties as assigned to support GSI and its customers.
  • Optimize Project Execution: Perform fieldwork, gather data, and create construction cost estimates to facilitate seamless project planning and implementation.
  • Comprehensive Project Reports: Deliver well-documented project files, including GIS data, maps, and relevant project notes, to facilitate seamless handoff and execution.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all designs comply with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and client-specific standards.
  • Design and Engineer Utility Projects: Develop and implement overhead and underground electric utility designs in alignment with client standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Work closely with internal teams, utility clients, and contractors to ensure project objectives are met with precision and efficiency.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Maintain consistent communication with internal teams and utility customers to address project updates, concerns, and requirements.
  • Stake minor projects and provide client training or support on GSI’s proprietary DDS software.
  • Ensure Project Compliance: Apply industry best practices, including adherence to the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), to ensure safe and compliant designs.
  • May require occasional work outside of traditional hours to meet deadlines, attend company events, or travel.
  • Apply client design and construction standards, including determining fuse sizes and tree trimming requirements.
  • Create right-of-way estimates and perform field checks for assigned projects.
  • Accurate Electric Utility Designs: Produce detailed overhead and underground electric utility project designs using client-provided engineering software.
  • Stay compliant with industry standards, including the National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
  • Design overhead and underground electric utility projects using client-provided engineering software.
  • Develop construction cost estimates and coordinate project details utilizing GIS, maps, Google Earth, and other tools.

  • Knowledge of overhead distribution framing and underground distribution design.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in distribution engineering for electric utilities or contractors.
  • Familiarity with utility design software (e.g., DDS, ArcFM, PLS-CADD) and asset management systems (e.g., SAP, Maximo).
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Adapt to Dynamic Environments: Manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and respond flexibly to changing client needs and project requirements.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and adaptability in fast-paced environments.
