The Chief Engineer provides daily leadership for the engineering team, overseeing the engineering program to achieve high‑quality work and superior customer service while ensuring alignment with Cushman & Wakefield's engineering platform and client expectations. This role upholds the highest ethical standards as defined in the company's Business Code of Conduct and related policies.
In addition to strategic oversight, the Chief Engineer is accountable for coordinating safety initiatives, managing building operational budgets, and maintaining compliance with all applicable codes and regulations. The position requires active communication with tenants, property managers, and vendors to support seamless building operations.
The role operates primarily in a professional office environment, utilizing standard office equipment while also requiring occasional on‑site presence for inspections and emergency response. Physical demands involve regular movement, stationary work, and the ability to extend arms and hands in various directions.
- Supervise engineers and maintenance staff, including hiring, training, and personnel development
- Ensure performance management, coaching, and development of team members via HR processes
- Coordinate annual scheduling and execution of the C&W Safety Program to achieve 100% site compliance
- Manage building operational accounts and assist in developing operating and capital budgets
- Oversee utility management, including tracking consumption, costs, reporting, and budgeting
- Conduct regular inspections of building systems and equipment, identifying and resolving issues
- Assist with maintenance and engineering issues as needed
- Recommend and implement improvements to preventive maintenance programs
- Develop and maintain a preventive and predictive maintenance program with scheduled tasks per manufacturer and industry best practices
- Create and maintain building‑specific maintenance and safety procedure manuals
- Maintain an Operations Document Library with plans, drawings, schematics, manuals, and warranties
- Provide building‑related systems and equipment training
- Coordinate maintenance activities with external contractors, tenant finish personnel, and engineers
- Oversee all building systems, including fire/life safety, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical, staying current with technology trends
- Maintain ongoing communication with tenants, clients, property management, and vendors
- Develop specifications and assist in solicitation, administration, and performance of maintenance/repair service contracts
- Assist in solicitation and acquisition of new management contracts as needed
- Respond quickly to emergency situations such as fire, evacuation, or equipment failure
- Implement and manage inventory control programs, purchasing parts and supplies
- Ensure compliance with codes, regulations, government agency requirements, and company directives
- Perform approximately 50% operating engineer duties, including shift work and on‑call responsibilities
