The role requires a quick learner who can support the crew instinctively, possesses a strong desire to learn, an energetic work ethic, and isn’t afraid to get hands dirty.
Key duties include operating specialized marine equipment and other fleet assets, ensuring crew safety, setting up and assisting with CPT equipment, sampling systems, and geophysical instruments according to ConeTec procedures, and providing assistance to engineers and technicians. The operator also helps mobilize and demobilize equipment in hard‑to‑access locations and coordinates crane contractors for safe lifts of marine equipment.
The Boat Operator must identify with ConeTec’s safety culture, prepare and follow all safe operating procedures before starting work, and promptly report any incidents, infractions, or near‑misses to the Project Manager and HSE Officer while adhering to incident reporting protocols.
Additional responsibilities include communicating equipment problems or field observations to supervisors or project managers, performing shop functions and routine equipment maintenance, seeking ways to improve operating procedures, and possessing fabrication and mechanical skills as an asset.
Required experience includes navigating water and operating marine equipment, with training or experience in geotechnical fieldwork, drilling, sampling, or heavy equipment mechanics. Candidates must be physically capable of demanding tasks, computer literate, and hold a high school diploma with strong reading, writing, and math skills. Electrical and mechanical skills, a clean driving record, a Class 5 driver’s licence (Class 1 preferred), and certifications such as Small Vessel Operator Proficiency or Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety are considered assets.
This shift‑based position involves routine travel to project sites throughout Western Canada, with possible assignments elsewhere in Canada and internationally. Applicants must pass a pre‑employment fit‑for‑duty test, including drug and alcohol screening and a criminal record check. ConeTec is an equal‑opportunity employer, considering all applicants without regard to protected characteristics.
