Puget Sound Energy is expanding its community and seeks talented individuals for its award‑winning energy efficiency programs. The Gas Operations team is hiring an entry‑level Gas Worker Trainee, with work‑arrangement details to be discussed during the interview.
The program lasts 18‑24 months, after which successful trainees become journeyman‑level Gas First Response employees. Work involves outdoor environments in all weather conditions, moderate to heavy physical activity, and operation of tools, equipment, and computers. A Washington State driver’s license is required, and advancing to a Customer Field Service Technician will require low‑voltage electrical licenses (06B and possibly 07D).
Minimum qualifications include effective written and oral communication, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to maintain required certifications and safety regulations. A Commercial Driver’s License with endorsements may be needed, and compliance with DOT Pipeline Operator Regulations is essential. Prior construction experience is a plus.
As a Gas Worker Trainee you will join a safety‑first, customer‑service focused team and receive comprehensive training on natural gas system operation, emergency procedures, equipment repair, and daily distribution tasks. No prior gas experience is required; all necessary skills will be taught.
PSE offers competitive wages, a full benefits package, and the Gas Worker Trainee Program is approved for GI Bill education benefits, allowing veterans to receive both a stipend and their GI Bill funds simultaneously. Employees are represented by the UA Plumbers & Pipe Fitters Union under a collective bargaining agreement.
During training you will rotate among various locations within PSE’s service territory, with base sites typically at Factoria, Georgetown, or North Seattle. The first nine months of training occur at the state‑of‑the‑art facility in Puyallup, and the role requires flexible transportation, potential overtime, and 24/7 call‑outs with proper PPE provided.
Starting pay is $29.18 per hour with step increases and annual raises; after completing the program, the journey‑level rate will be $54.70. Candidates must reside in one of five Washington counties, pass an assessment test, and undergo pre‑employment screening including a physical agility assessment and drug testing. The position is represented by the UA union, is safety‑sensitive, and requires alternating shifts, weekends, and emergency call‑outs.
Informational sessions are offered via Zoom on January 26, January 29, and February 3 at 7 pm, with meeting details provided. These sessions give applicants a chance to learn more about the role and ask questions.
PSE values its employees and provides a comprehensive total rewards package that includes medical, dental, vision, life, disability insurance, 401(k) and cash‑balance retirement options, PTO, paid holidays, and various voluntary benefits. The company’s mission is to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient energy to Washington communities while fostering growth and work‑life balance.
