In this role you will shape design decisions across the capital investment programme, driving standardisation, value, quality, safety and reduced emissions. You will lead technical support for a portfolio of water and wastewater projects and capital maintenance, influencing Scottish Water Requirements that set minimum standards for design, construction and maintenance.
You will provide civil engineering expertise throughout the Plan, Prepare and Deliver phases, ensuring technically competent scopes that balance service risk, whole‑life cost, sustainability, carbon and safety. You will champion a safety culture, share best practices, and work closely with operational, planning, consultancy and supply‑chain partners, attending the monthly team meeting in Edinburgh and collaborating on‑site two to three days a week.
By joining Scottish Water you will help safeguard vital water and wastewater services for communities across Scotland, contributing to a flourishing nation while working in a diverse and inclusive environment.
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland. At Scottish Water we protect Scotland’s most precious natural resource, delivering pure water from source to tap while caring for the environment. We are seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to join the Technical Support and Assurance Team, a centre of engineering excellence and technical leadership.
The successful candidate will hold a civil engineering degree and be chartered or progressing towards chartership, with proven knowledge of water and wastewater systems, design and construction regulations, and the ability to support standardisation and technical assurance. Strong communication, negotiation, liaison and influencing skills are essential for engaging stakeholders and reviewing emerging best practice.
We support a healthy work‑life balance with 38 days of annual leave (including public holidays) plus the option to buy five additional days, flexible working, and paid volunteer time. Employees also enjoy a defined‑benefit pension, life assurance, an annual bonus, and access to SW Splash rewards that provide savings on holidays, bills and shopping.
This is a Grade 7 position with a starting salary of £44,030, progressing up to £55,000 on performance‑driven pay. The role operates a balanced hybrid model, requiring half the time in a Scottish Water office, and offers a supportive, inclusive recruitment process that welcomes applicants who may not meet every criterion.
