Survey Technician

Description

The Survey Technician will work alongside a Survey Crew Chief or Land Surveyor to conduct plane and geodetic surveys, collect field data using conventional and GPS methods, and prepare accurate field notes and drawings. The position may also involve construction observation duties, participation in pre‑survey planning meetings, and communication with contractors, engineering staff, and project owners.

• Work with a Survey Crew Chief or Land Surveyor performing plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right‑of‑way, and control projects.
• Gather field survey data using conventional surveying and GPS methods.
• Prepare accurate field notes, drawings, and record changes in conditions while in the field.
• Assist with construction observation duties on civil engineering projects as needed.
• Learn and follow state and public agency surveying methods and standards.
• Participate in pre‑survey planning meetings, providing updates and progress throughout project phases.
• Exercise independent judgment and initiative in decision‑making.
• Communicate effectively with contractors, engineering staff, and project owner representatives in the field.
• Adhere to company handbook and mandated safety policies.
• Operate GPS, robotic, and total station survey equipment competently.
• Perform simple surveying calculations using engineering calculators and coordinate geometry software.
• Work outdoors on construction sites near traffic, noise, and dust.
• Stand and walk for prolonged periods while performing typical surveying tasks.
• Clear vegetation, dig holes, shovel snow, and pound stakes with hand tools as needed.
• Lift equipment or objects weighing 50 to 75 pounds.

Requirements

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree in Engineering Technology or Land Surveying is preferred, with relevant experience acceptable in lieu of the degree. Required skills include operating GPS, robotic, and total station equipment, familiarity with survey data collection, and proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with AutoCAD/Civil‑3D or MicroStation/GeoPak is a plus.

The role requires the ability to work both indoors at a computer and outdoors on construction sites, often near traffic, noise, and dust. Physical demands include prolonged standing and walking, lifting 50‑75 lb, and occasional tasks such as clearing vegetation, digging, or shoveling snow.

• Potential to advance to Land Surveyor or Crew Chief, overseeing other survey personnel and reporting to project managers and engineers.
• Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Travel and out‑of‑town stays required; may work overtime during construction season.
• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate Degree in Engineering Technology or Land Surveying highly desirable; applicable experience may substitute.
• Minimum 2 years of topographic and highway/roadway construction staking experience preferred.
• Familiar with survey data collection and construction survey methods.
• Experience with AutoCAD/Civil‑3D or MicroStation/GeoPak considered a plus.
• Proficient in Microsoft Windows/Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Willing to interact with people and work in team environments.
• Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Valid driver’s license required or ability to obtain one.
• Operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
• Work scheduled and required hours in the office or onsite for projects.
