The Principal Cable System Design Engineer will join the Transmission & Distribution team as a senior technical leader, responsible for planning, designing and delivering high‑voltage cable systems across multiple voltage levels. The role involves acting as a trusted advisor to Transmission System Operators, Distribution Network Operators, private developers and international energy majors, while shaping technical standards, innovation strategy and digital delivery within cable engineering.

Lead delivery of large‑scale HV/EHV cable system projects from concept to completion, ensuring quality, safety and innovation.
Develop and oversee HV cable designs including routing, burial risk assessments, thermal, electromagnetic and mechanical modelling.
Provide expert input on cable ratings, installation methods, jointing, cleating and system integration in challenging environments.
Validate complex calculations such as ampacity, short‑circuit forces, EMC, induced voltages and thermomechanical stresses to meet National Grid TPs, IEC and CIGRÉ standards.
Engage with clients and stakeholders to deliver technical assurance, strategic direction and value‑engineered solutions.
Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs (civil, structural, OHL, substation, marine) to produce integrated design solutions.
Manage technical risks, interfaces and quality reviews throughout procurement, construction and commissioning phases.
Conduct third‑party inspections, FAT/SAT witnessing and vendor oversight for cable and ancillary equipment.
Mentor and share knowledge within the cable systems engineering team to grow capability.
Support business development through proposals, bid reviews and client presentations.

Demonstrated technical leadership in HV/EHV cable system design and installation, including tunnel, urban and constrained settings.
Deep understanding of UK and international standards (National Grid TPs, IEC, CIGRÉ) and experience with regulated, quality‑assured environments.
Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and communicate effectively with senior stakeholders.
Degree in Electrical Engineering (MSc/MEng advantageous) and Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or progression.
Experience with cable analysis software such as CYMCAP or WinCable and advanced modelling tools.
