As a Technical Riding Technician you will provide mobile technical support across the ScotRail network, including outstations, working both day and night on a 24/7 rota. The role requires flexibility, rapid fault diagnosis and collaboration with maintenance controllers and planning teams to keep trains running safely and on time.
You will travel to meet trains in traffic, use diagnostic equipment to isolate and repair faults, update maintenance management systems, and ensure all work complies with engineering specifications and safety standards. Interaction with multiple stakeholders and preparation of technical scopes of work are also key parts of the job.
- Provide mobile technical support across the ScotRail network, including outstations, on 24/7 day and night shifts.
- Perform rapid fault finding, diagnosis, and isolation of defective components to return sets to service.
- Liaise with HRL Maintenance Controller, Central Planning Cell, and ScotRail operational staff to minimise delays.
- Travel to meet trains in traffic and respond to in‑service incidents, including night‑shift travel between outstations.
- Use 4G tablet, diagnostic laptop and appropriate tools to record work and report unresolved issues.
- Update Maintenance Management systems with clear, concise information and follow engineering processes and specifications.
- Read and interpret traction and rolling stock drawings, Vehicle Maintenance Instructions, and specifications.
- Remove, repair or replace traction and rolling stock components using engineered tools and techniques.
- Identify repeat defects, create corrective actions, and draft technical scopes of work for other staff.
- Conduct SSHEQ risk assessments, adhere to safe systems of work, and champion safety practices.
- Communicate effectively with personnel at all levels and support the TRT Team Leader and Outstations Manager.

The ideal candidate holds a Network Rail Sentinel PTS (or can obtain one), a valid driving licence, and an M&E HNC, apprenticeship, or NVQ Level 3 engineering qualification. Strong problem‑solving abilities, the capacity to work under pressure independently or in a team, and excellent written and verbal communication are essential. Intermediate IT skills in Word and Excel are desirable.
- Hold Network Rail Sentinel PTS (or willingness to obtain) and a valid driving licence.
- Possess M&E HNC or apprenticeship in mechanical/electrical disciplines or NVQ Level 3 engineering qualification.
- Demonstrate ability to work independently or in a team, make decisions under pressure, and prioritise workload.
- Exhibit good written and verbal communication, professional representation of Hitachi Rail, and knowledge of relevant regulations.
- Desirable: intermediate IT skills (Word, Excel).
